How To Clean Painted Walls

Whether you’re getting ready for an interior paint job, or giving your home a deep clean, getting all the marks off your walls can be a challenge. Here are a few tips on how to clean painted walls effectively.

Different stains require different treatments, so we’ve listed some of the most common stains, and easy, effective ways to clean painted walls.

Removing Dust and Dirt From Painted Walls

Dust and dirt marks are very common, and can be easily removed using a range of methods. If you’re not sure where to start, give this one a go.

You Will Need:

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Ladder
  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Old towel(s)
  • Detergent
  1. If you want to protect your floor from possible water spills, place a few old towels or plastic on your floor.
  2. Begin vacuuming your walls. This will remove any loose dirt and dust, as well as larger cobwebs.
  3. Fill your bucket with warm water and just enough detergent to produce a few bubbles. Too much detergent will leave your walls sticky, which will cause them to become dirty again very quickly.
  4. Soak and wring out your sponge, and begin wiping down your walls. Start from the top, and work down. Dry the surface with a towel as you go.

Removing Wine or Coffee From Painted Walls

Painted walls will not absorb liquids, so wine and coffee stains are usually no problem to remove. It’s best to wipe away the stain before it dries. However, if it has been left to dry, give this method a go.

You Will Need:

  • Bucket
  • Detergent
  • Cloth
  • Towel
  • Magic eraser or other surface cleaner
  1. Fill a bucket with warm water. Add detergent until a small amount of bubbles form. Once again, too much detergent will make your walls sticky.
  2. Soak the cloth in the water and detergent solution, and rub over the stain. Soak your cloth again, and repeat until the stain is completely, or almost completely removed.
  3. Dry the wall well with a towel, and use a Magic Eraser, or another kind of surface cleaner. This should remove any faint discolouration.

Removing Texta and Pen From Painted Walls

If your kids have ‘redecorated’ your walls with textas or pens, try out this cleaning method for painted walls.

You Will Need:

  • Magic Eraser, Gumption, or other surface cleaner
  • Bucket
  • Cloth
  • Detergent
  • Towel
  1. Using a cloth and Gumption, or a Magic Eraser, rub the mark. This should remove the stain completely.
  2. If the mark is still apparent, try going over it with warm, soapy water. Dry well with a towel.
  3. Try the surface cleaner again. If the mark is still apparent, you may need to paint over it using leftover paint.

Removing Crayon From Painted WallsHow To Clean Painted Walls

Seeing a rainbow of colour scrawled across your walls looks worse than it is. Crayon should come off easily.

You Will Need:

  • Butter knife
  • Detergent
  • Bucket
  • Cloth
  • Surface Cleaner
  1. Using a butter knife, try to scrape as much of the excess crayon off as you can without damaging your walls.
  2. Mix a warm water and detergent solution. Using your cloth, scrub the crayon. Most of it should come off.
  3. Use a Magic Eraser, Gumption, or other surface cleaners to remove the remainder of the mark.

When cleaning your walls with water, ensure that you do not wet a power socket.
