When you think of wallpaper, you probably imagine a stuffy old house with shag carpet and walls covered floor to ceiling in apricot-coloured flowers. We are here to turn this idea on its head and show you a whole new way to have fun with wallpaper. Here are our tips for using wallpaper in a modern home.
Less is more
As house painters in Brisbane, we are seeing more and more homeowners use wallpaper in new and exciting ways to add interest to their homes. The common thread – less is so much more.
Take the example below. This stunning property in West End needed a refresh. To keep the home looking bright and contemporary, we installed accent wallpaper inside the television unit.
The subtle blue colour and dainty geometric pattern add a refined elegance, while preventing the area from looking too plain. And, because there is such a small amount of wallpaper used, it does not overwhelm the space.
Keep colours neutral
Another feature of modern wallpaper use is selecting a design that features a neutral – or at least subtle – colour palette. Here’s another stunning example.
The client chose a feminine floral design that is anything but stuffy. The cool-toned neutrals add a contemporary twist, and the blue accents tie in with the rest of the décor in the room.
What’s more, the vertical lines draw the eye upward, making the ceiling appear higher.
Keep it simple
One final tip before you spend the next hour researching wallpaper online: keep the design simple. Avoid patterns that look messy or muddy from far away. We love the paired-back yet classic design a client of ours chose below.
This floral wallpaper looks fabulous up close, far away, and obstructed by furniture. In other words, it reads well no matter where you are standing in the room.
