3 Essential House Painting Tips

house painting tipsHouse painting is no easy task. If you’ve never painted an interior or exterior before, you’re sure to make a few mistakes along the way.

Hopefully, these three essential house painting tips will help you with your DIY paint job.

Let’s get started!

Tip 1: Mix Together Multiple Cans of Paint

Did you know paint colour may vary ever-so-slightly from one can of paint to the next? If you have to switch paint tins in the middle of a project, the difference could be noticeable.

If you’re painting an entire interior, exterior, or even just one wall, we suggest gathering your purchased paint tins, pouring them into a larger container, and mixing them together well. This process is known as ‘boxing’, and will ensure even colour over the surface.

To do this, you’ll need to approximate how much paint to buy. Follow the step-by-step process in our post How to Calculate How Much Paint to Buy, to avoid over or under estimating the amount of paint.

Tip 2: Clean Surfaces Thoroughly

You’ve probably heard this one before, but we cannot stress enough just how important it is in achieving professional, long-lasting results.

Dirt and oil will not allow the paint to properly adhere to the surface. This will cause premature chipping and peeling.

For more specific information on cleaning different types of surfaces in preparation for painting, have a read of our article Prepare the Interior of Your Home for a Paint Makeover.

Tip 3: Paint Trim Before Walls and Ceiling

Over the years we’ve come up with a certain method or process for painting an interior room: you start with the trim, then the ceiling, and then the walls. This order results in an easier, faster paint.

There’s no need to be super neat when painting the trim. The number one goal is to achieve a smooth, even surface. If the trim paint gets on the wall, don’t worry – you’ll be painting them later, anyway. Once the trim is dry (wait at least 24 hours), you can tape it off using blue painters’ tape. Then, you’re ready to paint the ceiling, and the walls.
