Kraudelt Painting – Paint Storage Ideas
At Kraudelt Painting, we love our work and we love our paints. Needless to say, we have more than a few colours and types in storage. So we thought we would share some secrets on how to store paint properly and have some fun at the same time.
The Technical Bits
Paint is designed to react with air to dry and set, so the less air is in the tin, the more likely it is to stay liquid. But it also reacts to heat, cold, and of course, moisture can rust the tin.
If you have an old tin of paint and want to check if it's still OK to use, here's what to do:
- Open the lid and sniff the paint. Does it smell like paint? If it smells terrible like something rotten, then dispose of it at your local hazardous goods collection point because it's just taking up space.
- If the paint still smells like paint, you should then stir it until it is properly mixed. If it is thin and very runny, then it's no use to you anymore.
- If the paint is still "creamy" in texture, then do a test patch and see if it dries in the time the instructions say it should.
- Providing the paint passes all the tests, you're all set to patch that wall or paint over that scribble.
Now for the fun bit. If you have several almost empty paint tins of varying sizes, types, and colours taking up valuable space in your shed or garage then here is...
The Kraudelt Painting Fun Way to Store Paint
- Get hold of some large, good quality glass storage jars with screw top lids
- Buy some rectangular and some round labels (preferably waterproof)
- For each can of paint write the following details on your labels:
- Paint type (e.g. primer, acrylic, semi-gloss etc.)
- Paint brand
- Interior or exterior
- Paint name and/or code
- Date when it was bought (if known)
- Where the paint was used in your home (e.g. Bedroom 3 feature wall, kitchen highlights)
- Make sure the paint in the tin is well stirred and there are no lumps.
- Pour the paint into the jar
- Tighten the lid and clean the jar.
- Stick the round label on the lid and the rectangular one on the bottle.
- Put the old tin out in the sun to dry so that you can put it in the rubbish bin without creating hazardous waste.
- The ideal place to stack and store the paint jars is in a dark, cool and dry space.
Your spare paint will be safely stored for future use to patch or re-paint in exactly the right shade. If you would like more advice on paint storage, colour matching, or any other painting requirements, please give us a call on (07) 3829 5735.
