What To Consider When Painting Rendered Walls

 

Don’t make the mistake of thinking painting rendered walls is as simple as opening a tin of paint, and well, painting.

Each unique surface requires a unique painting process, from preparation to finishing and everything in between. Rendered walls are no exception.

Before we get started, we’d like to point out that painting newly rendered walls is completely different to painting old or damaged rendered walls. So, we’ll look at each scenario separately.

Painting New, Undamaged Rendered Walls

The number one thing to remember when painting newly rendered walls is moisture. Water is added to the render mix to assist with application, and to bind the mortar. If you paint over damp render, water will become trapped. This can lead to a host of future problems, including cracks, mould, and blistered paint. Ensure the render is 100% dry, and then leave it for a few days more. You can never be too sure!

Once your surface is dry, we recommend the following:

• Inspect the walls thoroughly. Look for areas that haven’t been rendered, and check for cracks. If you do find any issues with your render, and you don’t feel confident taking them on, contact your contractor.
• Clean the walls. Often newly rendered walls are dry, dusty or dirty. Don’t use water to clean them. Instead, take a stiff bristled brush or broom and brush over the surface.
• Prime the walls. If your walls are particularly sandy, we suggest priming them.

Now you’re ready to paint! Cut in corners first, then paint the remainder of the walls starting from the top. You may need multiple coats.

Repainting Old, Damaged Rendered Walls

Older rendered walls are more likely to be damaged, which means more prep work is required. Often, this prep work is far beyond the average DIY-er ability – that’s where we (or other tradespeople, if needed) can help.

We will check for the following:

• Flaky paint
• Cracks
• Mould or moss
• Dodgy repairs
• Hollow render
• Old, unused nails or screws
• Damp areas

Once the rendered walls are in like-new condition, painting can begin!
