How to Dispose of Paint Responsibly

dispose of paint responsiblyThere’s no question – you must dispose of paint responsibly.

Paint contains hazardous chemicals that can seriously damage our environment. Mindful disposal of paint isn’t difficult, and will help keep your local waterways, plants, and animals healthy and happy.

Water-Based Paint Disposal

If you’ve got excess latex, acrylic, or water-based paint, there are four things you can do to ensure the paint is dealt with responsibly.

Keep it for Future Touch-Ups

Walls can stain, scratch, and peel. In these cases, leftover paint can be a real blessing. Paint can be stored in a cool, dark environment with the lid securely fitted. When the time comes to use it, give it a good mix.

Give it to Someone Else

Maybe a friend is planning some DIY for their home. Or a family member is looking for materials to create an artwork. Giving leftover paint to someone else is a fantastic way to get rid of it. After all – you paid good money for the paint. It would be a shame for it to go to waste.

Try asking your circle of friends, reaching out to community groups, or posting about the paint on Facebook.

Leave the Paint to Dry Up

If all else fails, you can dispose of acrylic, latex, and water-based paints at home. First, you’ll need to dry up the paint.

  • If the paint can is less than one-quarter full, just leave the can out in a well-ventilated area with the lid off. Remember to keep it away from kids and pets.
  • If the paint can is more than one-quarter full, you can speed up the drying out process by adding mulch, kitty litter, or paint hardener from the hardware store.

Once the paint has hardened, it can be placed in the household bin.

Oil-Based Paint Disposal

Discarding of oil-based paint is a little more complicated. If you are unable to use it up or pass it on, you’ll need to contact your local council to determine how to dispose of the paint.

Remember, never pour paint down your kitchen, bathroom, or laundry drain, or down the storm water drain.
