Queenslander House Colours: Choosing colour schemes for Queenslander houses

Renovating a Queenslander house? Selecting the perfect Queenslander house colours is no easy feat – should you go modern or traditional, neutral or bold? We’re here to help you choose the right Queenslander paint schemes for your home.

Every corner of the world – from England to Japan and everywhere in between – has something in common: a distinct architectural style that represents the country’s or region’s history. Australia is no different.

Here in sunny Queensland, we have the iconic, traditional, time-tested Queenslander.

What is a Queenslander house?

A Queenslander style home is classic in its appeal. A typical Queenslander features detailed timber work, sprawling verandas, soaring ceilings, sweeping staircases, finials, window canopies, gables, and fretwork. These design elements were chosen years and years ago to help families grapple with the scorching summer weather – long before the air conditioner changed the game.

The Queenslander method of construction has lasted over a century. One-hundred-plus-year-old, heritage-listed dwellings sit side-by-side with brand-new modern-day Queenslander homes. The effect is utterly charming – anyone that has driven through some of Brisbane’s oldest suburbs can attest to the appeal of wide, tree-lined streets dotted with stunning Queenslander homes.

Choosing Queenslander house colours

Queenslander homes and their heritage look are truly beautiful. But the grandeur of yesteryear can fast lose its charm – peeling paint, outdated Queenslander exterior colour schemes, and other signs of wear and tear can strip these beauties of their elegance.

If this sounds familiar, you’re now faced with a big, albeit difficult, task: choosing Queensland house colours.

Because Queenslanders are so timeless and so versatile, you can take Queenslander paint colours in several directions. Let’s take a look at three of the most popular Queensland house colour schemes.

1. Traditional Queenslander house colours

Grey is a fantastic traditional Queenslander colour

Your first option is to go for a traditional Queenslander paint colour scheme. This option is as classic as the architecture itself.

Traditional Queenslander colours include muted greys (like in the ‘after’ shot of the home we painted above), stark whites, and soft biscuits. Butter yellows and sandy beiges also lend themselves to the traditional look. If you work with our team, our free colour consultant can help you select the right colour palette for your home.

We had the pleasure of transforming this classic Queenslander in Manly. The elegant grey (Dulux Klute) is the perfect backdrop to the high contrast white (Dulux Lexicon, which is one of the most popular white paint colours), highlighting the home’s architectural features. The concrete fence and modern railing add a contemporary touch without detracting from the property’s old-school charm.

2. All white Queenslander exterior colours

If you like traditional but want something a little brighter and lighter, and all while Queenslander exterior may be your perfect colour scheme. White on white Queenslanders can go one of two directions.

White Queenslander houses always look quaint and classic

The first is reminiscent of an English cottage – sweet, understated, and extremely homely. Without a contrasting colour, white softens bold architectural features and helps greenery stand out. The stunning Cleveland Queenslander above is one we painted a few years ago.

The second direction is more of the contemporary Hamptons look that has proven to be extremely popular in the last few years. To create a Hamptons-style Queenslander, opt for a bright, cool-toned white exterior paint.

3. Playful Queenslander paint schemes

When it comes to deciding your Queenslander house colours, there really are no rules. It’s not all about greys and whites – if you want a bright pink home, go for it.

Don’t want to become the talk of the neighbourhood? Express your unique creativity in a more subtle way with a playful accent colour. If you’ve decided on an all-white Queenslander exterior paint scheme, why not paint the front door fire engine red? Or turquoise? Or lavender?

      Hi Anne,

The colours for the white Queenslander is as follows

      Weatherboards – Pistachio Tang
Eaves and trims and doors etc – Vivid White

      Hope this helps!

I like the pistachio tang for weatherboards (Hardiplank in the case of my repro Queenslander) and the Vivid white eaves and trims but rather fancy a highlight colour for handrails and detailing. Have you any suggestions. And then there’s the roof, which appears to be more prominent and is visible from the road in may case.

That grey house at the top looks amazing. What is the colour scheme on this? How do we arrange a colour discussion and quote for painting? We are looking at getting our Queenslander rental painted and like what your images showcase.

I am painting the front of my weatherboard Queenslander which is west facing. I am using Vivid white for trims and want a white colour for the weatherboards. But which one? I want it to look fresh & clean. Thank you
