5 Things to Consider Before Renovating

renovationsThinking of renovating your home? How exciting! Under the right circumstances, renovations are a rewarding, worthwhile endeavour.

Here are five things to consider before renovating, to ensure your renovations are a success, not a nightmare.

1. Should You DIY?

Let me guess, you’re ready, sledgehammer in hand, to knock down the kitchen wall, paint the ceiling, tile your bathroom, and save a ton of money in the process? And that’s great – if you have the right skills.

If you find yourself watching Youtube tutorials on how to install a sink or paint a window frame, it’s probably best to step back and call in the professionals. DIY will save you money upfront, but if anything goes wrong, it will cost a whole lot to fix.

2. Find the Perfect Contractors

If you decide against DIY-ing, you may need to hire a variety of contractors. And you want to choose the right ones.  We’ve all heard horror stories about some tradies who promise perfection but don’t deliver.

The best way to find reliable, skilled contractors is by asking your friends and family and do your research. They should proactively display their work examples and actual reviews from customers on their website and you should also be able to see reviews on independent sites like TrueLocal and Google Plus. Check our customer reviews and on TrueLocal – and our comprehensive job portfolios/galleries.

3. Be Realistic About Your Budget

Always over-estimate, rather than under-estimate, as there’s sure to be a surprise or an additional “must have”. Lastly, remember to consider whether or not your home will be livable throughout the entire renovation, and factor in any accommodation costs.

4. Do You Have Time?

Renovations tend to take longer than you initially anticipate. It could mean weeks, even months of tradies in and out of your home, bedrooms that can’t be slept in, and eating off the barbeque for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Consider whether you and your family have the flexibility to accommodate for the possible disruptions.

5. Know the Rules

Are you planning to knock down a wall? Build a pool? Extend the deck? Double check the rules and regulations, and whether you’ll need council permission. It would be a tragedy if you had to reverse all the hard work you’ve done.
